Alastair Newton Brown is a Sydney-based screenwriter and director.
Alastair recently wrote Episode 5 of Last King of the Cross for Helium Pictures/Paramount +.
Alastair directed and produced his feature film screenplay Here Be Dragons in Serbia and the film received its US premiere at the Cinequest Film Festival in August 2022. This psychological thriller is about an investigator who quietly goes to Belgrade to catch a war criminal whom everybody thought was dead. It was released across Australia in February 2024 and is set for release in the USA and Canada in June.
Alastair is currently developing a VR short film called Tipping Point with producer/director Kate Riedl alongside Rafael Bonachela, Richard Tognetti and Wesley Enoch for the Sydney Dance Company. He is also developing original television drama series and feature screenplays for the local and international markets.
In 2015 Alastair was awarded a Screen Australia grant to develop his own slate of screen projects while working at screenwriter John Collee’s company, DeWinter Snow, under the mentorship of John and producer Andrew Mason. In that role Alastair co-wrote feature scripts with John Collee, developed his own features as well as assisted on others as a script consultant. Alastair has also written, directed and produced several short films.
Prior to his full-time screen career, Alastair taught Modern European History, Politics and Critical Thinking to high school students in Dubai, United Arab Emirates and in Edinburgh, Scotland. He is a photographer with work exhibited and sold throughout Australia, the UK and UAE and published work in international publications including National Geographic. He holds a BA (Hons) from UNSW in History, English and Philosophy.
