Production Designer
Alex has built an extensive list of credits as a production designer on feature films, with his most recent being Leigh Whannell’s remake of the classic horror film, The Invisible Man, for Universal Pictures, Blumhouse Productions and Goalpost Pictures. Alex’s design work for the film has received unanimous acclaim as well as an AACTA Award nomination for Best Production Design in a Feature Film and an APDG Award nomination in the same category.
Other recent credits include Jennifer Kent’s, The Nightingale (prod. Kirstina Ceyton/ Causeway Films, 2018). The film is an epic period piece set in 1820’s Tasmania, The Nightingale was part of the official selection for the 75th Venice Film Festival and won the Special Jury Prize. The Nightingale was awarded Best Feature Film at the 2019 AACTA Awards and Alex received his latest AACTA nomination for Best Production Design in a Feature Film for his work on the film. Alex also designed the television series The Unlisted (2019) for Aquarius Films and Netflix.
Alex designed the critically acclaimed psychological horror The Babadook (prod. Kristina Ceyton/ Causeway Films, 2012) directed by Jennifer Kent, Being Venice (prod. Karen Radzyner/ Dragonet Films, 2011) directed by Milo Bilborough and Wish You Were Here (prod. Angie Fielder/ Aquarius Films, 2011) directed by Kieran Darcy-Smith.
Alex was nominated for an AACTA award for Best Production Design for The Babadook in 2015 as well as picking up a nomination for a Critics Circle Award for Best Production Design in the same year.
Alex originally studied Fine Art at the UNSW College of Fine Arts and the was accepted into an exchange program at the world-renowned Glasgow School of Art in the UK where he completed the 2nd year of his Bachelor of Fine Art. Alex was one of four students accepted into the Production Design Masters course at the internationally acclaimed Australian Film and Television School (AFTRS) in 2003. Alex was the recipient of the Fox Award for best production design in his graduating year.
In 2022, Alex designed visual artist, Del Kathryn Barton’s debut feature film, Blaze (Causeway Films). Most recently, he worked on Eric (dir. Lucy Forbes), a television series for Netflix starring Benedict Cumberbatch.
