Director
Catherine Millar is an award-winning director who has worked on many of Australia’s most critically and commercially successful TV dramas. Her credits are numerous and diverse, spanning drama, crime, comedy, fantasy, young adult and children’s drama.
Catherine was the set-up director of the psychological thriller series, The Secret She Keeps for Lingo Pictures and Network Ten. The series features Laura Carmichael, Jessica De Gouw, Michael Dorman and Ryan Corr and was based on the Michael Robotham best-selling novel of the same name. The six-part thriller, of which Catherine directed four episodes, was a huge success for Network Ten and went on to premiere in the UK on BBC1; this marked a milestone as one of the first Australian TV dramas to screen in primetime on the BBC’s flagship channel in recent years.
Catherine’s other credits include the critically acclaimed and award-winning Janet King (Screentime/ABC, 2017), the hugely successful A Place to Call Home (Seven Productions/Foxtel 2016-18l) for which Catherine helmed the series final episodes, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries (Every Cloud Productions/ABC, 2013) and fourteen episodes across four seasons of Wentworth (Fremantle/Foxtel, 2013-16).
Darlings of God (ABC TV, 1989), which Catherine developed and directed, won her an AWGIE for Best TV Adaptation. Catherine was also nominated for an AFI for Best TV Director for her episode of Twisted Tales (Nine Network, 1996). Her other credits include Water Rats (Nine Network, 1997), The Lost World (Coote Hayes/ Alliance Atlantis, 1999-2000), Beastmaster (Alliance Atlantis, 2001) Farscape (Jim Henson Productions, SyFy Channel/ Nine Network, 2000-01), Sleepover Club (Burberry Productions, Nine Network, 2003), Sword of Honour (Seven Network, 1986), Darlings of the Gods (ABC, 1989), The New Adventures of Black Beauty (Isambard Productions, 1990-91), Heartbreak High (Gannon Television, Ten Network, 1995-98) and Mumbo Jumbo (Artist Services/ Network Seven, 1999).
Catherine has also had leading roles in screen education as Head of Directing from 2007 to 2010 and as Deputy Director of Screen Content from 2010 to 2012 both at the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) – which is also her alma mater.
In 2022 Catherine directed two episodes of the ABC and EQ Media crime-drama Troppo, alongside directors Jocelyn Moorhouse and Yolanda Ramke, the courtroom thriller series The Twelve (Easy Tiger/ Binge), starring Sam Neil, and The Last King of the Cross for Helium Pictures and Paramount+. She was the set-up director for One Night (Easy Tiger, Motive Pictures/ Paramount+), a six-part mystery starring Jodie Whittaker, Yael Stone, and Nicole da Silva. Most recently Catherine directed block 4 of NCIS: Sydney (EndemolShine/ Paramount Plus).
