Writer
David Hannam is an experienced creative with career spanning twenty years in television writing.
Most recently, David has had a series picked up for further commissioning in the UK. He also has original projects in development with BBC Australia, Dreamchaser Entertainment and is also working closely with GoodThing on a new series. A former television journalist and long-time news junkie, David works across all genres but has a particular interest in contemporary stories drawn from real life, in additional to edge-of-your-seat thriller hybrids, of which he has several in active development.
David wrote two episodes on the second season of AMC+/Acorn’s first Australian original commission Darby and Joan, starring Bryan Brown and Greta Scacchi. This marked his return to the show as a writer after penning episode 4 in series one. He was also executive producer across the first season. In 2022, David wrote and script consulted on Helium’s Paper Dolls, originally for Paramount+, but was acquired by Netflix in 2024.
David is best known for penning ABC’s hugely popular biopic Carlotta (Story Ark Productions, 2014) and for his work on Matchbox/NBCU’s hit teen sci-fi Nowhere Boys (ABC Me, 2014-18). The latter show garnered numerous awards including a BAFTA and International Emmy. He also helped develop the first season of the internationally successful Prisoner reboot Wentworth (Fremantle Australia, 2013).
In addition to development and production executive roles, David’s writing and script producing credits include Wanted (Seven Network/ Matchbox Pictures, 2018), Secret Bridesmaids’ Business (Seven Studios, 2019), The Doctor Blake Mysteries (December Media, 2017), A Place to Call Home (Seven Network, 2015-17), critically acclaimed teen series More Than This (Baby Banksia/ Paramount+, 2022) and the beloved, internationally successful Dance Academy (Werner Film Productions, 2010-12).
