Congrats to Noni Hazlehurst and Paige Rattray on the opening of 'The Beauty Queen of Leenane'
The Beauty Queen of Leenane opened at the Sydney Theatre Company this weekend to rave reviews.
Starring Noni Hazlehurst and directed by Paige Rattray, the play by Martin McDonagh follows Maureen Folan who lives a lonely existence with Mag (Hazlehurst), her aged mother. Their relationship is more arm wrestle than warm embrace. Now, when Maureen stands a chance at romance and escape, Mag’s cantankerous influence must be dealt with.
“In a performance for the ages, Noni Hazlehurst gives wheedling, whining. manipulative Mag an impassive face, weighty body and calculating eyes that miss nothing as they dart about. “ - The Australian
“Paige Rattray directs this production not with a thirst not for blood – which is easy to do in a black comedy like this, lean into the hideousness – but for deep, unspeakable vulnerability.” - The Guardian
“Paige Rattray directs the spectacular cast with an eye for detail that makes every move, every fleeting glance tell.” - Sydney Morning Herald
“Hazlehurst is a glorious Mag, shifting from repellent to pathetic to heroic in the blink of an eye.” - Sydney Morning Herald
The Beauty Queen of Leenane runs until the 21st of December at the STC. You can purchase tickets here.
