James Croke

Writer | Director

With a strong sense of genre and a natural ability for storytelling, James has been writing elevated-genre scripts which have attracted local and international attention for the past several years.

He recently finished shooting his first feature film, Latency, in Thailand. An action/thriller about a professional gamer (played by Sasha Luss of Luc Besson’s Anna) who suffers from acute agoraphobia. When she receives a new device to enhance her game by interpreting her brain activity, she begins to wonder if the device is reading her mind or now actually controlling it. It was produced by Scott Clayton, Wych Kaosayananda, Gary A. Hirsch and Jordan Gertner (best known for producing films such as Vincent Gallo’s Buffalo 66, Larry Clark’s Bully and Spring Breakers directed by Harmony Korine).

In 2011, his conceptual sci-fi script Solitary progressed to the Quarterfinals Round of the Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting, the Fellowship run by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences and has been optioned by Porchlight Films. Since then, he has had another script selected for the Nicholl Fellowship, sci-fi/action feature Harvester, which went through to the Semifinals in 2012.

James’ short film, Shift (2014), which he wrote, directed and produced was screened at over twenty film festivals worldwide, including Palm Springs, Cinequest and Raindance. Shift won Best Film at Sandfly Film Festival, two ACS awards and the Australian Production Design Guild award for design on a short film.

A feature version of Shift is currently in development, along with the period horror Hamelin, the sci-fi/thrillers Coercion and Code and the TV concept Vision.
