Critics Praise David Williamson's 'Family Values' at Griffin Theatre Company

Congratulations to David Williamson whose latest play Family Values is being praised by audiences and critics alike.

What’s it about:

A celebrated federal judge. His son, a born-again Christian. His daughter, a Border Force officer. Her partner, the captain of a Border Force ship. His other daughter, a left-wing activist. His wife, who has worked all her life to keep the family together. Saba, an asylum seeker on the run from Nauru. On the eve of his birthday, is it too much to expect his wife and three children celebrate with him?

Sydney critics were delighted with the play.

Over his 50 years playwright David Williamson has amassed hefty critical and cultural baggage but, in his latest work, Family Values, director Lee Lewis puts that aside and lets the words speak for themselves. The result is a powerful, funny and poignant call to action. ★★★★ Sydney Morning Herald by Harriet Cunningham

This play transcends its format. It is written with such outrage and anger that the effect is very powerful. Williamson has raised the stakes very high here and he hasn’t in 50 years lost his satirical humour or his compassion for the underdog. The Australian by John McCallum

In typical Williamson style, a lot of fireworks fly as the debates spin and spin out of control. It’s one of his sharpest plays in years, and the comedy for which he’s best known (“the only anesthetist in Sydney who doesn’t need drugs to put his patients to sleep” is a great jab) shines through consistently. Timeout by Ben Neutze

Family Values will run at the Griffin Theatre Company until the 7th of March. Tickets are selling fast, you can purchase your tickets here.
