Neil Armfield’s ‘Hamlet’ Opens to Rave Reviews at the Sydney Opera House

Hamlet presented by Opera Australia recently opened at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House receiving its Sydney debut. Directed by Cameron’s client Neil Armfield, Hamlet was commissioned and premiered by Glyndebourne, performed at the Metropolitan Opera of New York and the Adelaide Festival to great acclaim. Music by Brett Dean and libretto by Matthew Jocelyn after William Shakespeare, this opera has become one of the most successful operas ever composed by an Australian.

“Operatic Hamlet is a triumph…Director Neil Armfield’s 2017 production is as eloquent as ever.” ★★★★★ Sydney Morning Herald

“Neil Armfield’s direction maintains the forward momentum to the ultimate bloodbath without sacrificing humanity or emotion. This Hamlet is an unforgettable achievement with the remarkable Allan Clayton at its heart. Those lucky enough to see it will know they’ve witnessed something special.” ★★★★★ Stage Noise

The final word goes to Armfield. He is much loved by Australian audiences for his directorial vision and Hamlet is an incredible theatrical reinvention. His 1995 stage production of the play …was a milestone. To trump that, throwing all the parts in the air and allowing them to settle into a new rethinking and art form, is testament to his deep connection with this play and its possibilities.”  ★★★★ Arts Hub

Running until 9 August 2024 at the Joan Sutherland Theatre, Sydney Opera House.
